AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? As far as Lance Armstrong is concerned, it's all over.

The stress, the waiting, the whispers about whether he doped during his stellar cycling career, all of it ended when ? after nearly two years ? federal prosecutors closed an investigation of him last week without bringing any charges.

"I'm happy. I'm glad it's behind me," Armstrong told The Associated Press on Thursday in his first interview since prosecutors announced they were dropping the case.

The seven-time Tour de France winner said he remained confident he would not be indicted, but admitted the weight of the long investigation took a toll on him personally.

"It's not a pleasant experience ... It was difficult at times," he said. "But I was confident that we would always end up in this place."

After speaking with the AP, Armstrong participated in a teleconference with media covering this weekend's triathlon in Panama City, Panama, where he is scheduled to compete.

For the now 40-year-old Armstrong, the federal government's decision should put a stop to any allegations or rumors about performance-enhancing drug use during his career.

"It's over," he said. "I'm moving on."

Armstrong maintains he has never failed a drug test, but he nonetheless became the focus of investigators' attention after former teammates Floyd Landis accused him in 2010 of participating in a doping program.

Landis was stripped of his 2006 Tour title after failing a drug test. Armstrong won every Tour from 1999-2005.

A federal grand jury in Los Angeles looked at whether a doping program was established for Armstrong's team while, at least part of the time, it received government sponsorship from the U.S. Postal Service.

U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. announced last Friday his office had closed the case but did not give a reason. The World Anti-Doping Agency followed up this week by urging the U.S. government to quickly hand over evidence collected in the investigation.

"I don't want to get bogged down with that. I'm not concerned with that. I'm not going to worry about that," Armstrong said.

Armstrong, who has been known to attack his critics in the media and on Twitter, had only issued a muted written statement in response to the end of the investigation when the decision was first announced.

He was reluctant to talk much more about it on Thursday, but said he had a quiet celebration with his family when the investigation was closed.

"I hugged my kids, hugged my girlfriend and went and opened a cold beer," Armstrong said.

Although Armstrong was convinced that he would not be indicted, the cyclist said he was ready to fight a costly legal battle if he was.

"You had to consider all possibilities," he said.

Armstrong said he'll turn his attention in 2012 to competing in Ironman triathlons and supporting the California Cancer Research Act, a proposal to increase taxes on cigarettes by $1 a pack to raise more than $500 million a year.

He also is the founder of the cancer charity Livestrong.

Cancer drug may have Alzheimer's benefits

A cancer drug that sweeps an ominous plaque-forming protein from mouse brains within hours and reverses Alzheimer?s-like behavior in the rodents in days may offer a powerful new way to prevent or even reverse the brain-wasting disease in humans.

The drug, called bexarotene, has been on the market for about 10 years to treat T-cell lymphoma, often after other treatments have failed. But bexarotene can do a completely different job in the brain, researchers report online February 9 in Science.

?This is a pretty fantastic drug,? says Paige Cramer of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, coauthor of the new study, which used bexarotene to treat mice suffering from an Alzheimer?s-like condition.

The brains of people with Alzheimer?s disease are marked by high levels of a protein called amyloid-beta that can exist in both small fragments that scramble nerve cell communication and in large, sticky clumps called plaques.

Cramer and her colleagues studied mice that had brains full of both kinds of A-beta. Just hours after mice began taking bexarotene, levels of the smaller kind of A-beta in their brains fell, reaching a 25 percent reduction after 24 hours. After 14 days of treatment, plaque levels fell by 75 percent, the team reports.

?Nothing tested comes anywhere close to the speed with which existing amyloid is washed away by this drug,? says neurologist and neuroscientist Samuel Gandy of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

The drug works by changing the behavior of a cholesterol-carrying protein called ApoE by targeting a protein that regulates it. (ApoE is no stranger to Alzheimer?s researchers: People with a particular version of ApoE have a higher risk of the disease.) Earlier studies have found that ApoE shuttles A-beta out of the brain, acting, as coauthor Gary Landreth of Case Western calls it, as ?a garbage disposal.? By improving ApoE?s ability to remove A-beta, ?bexarotene helps Mother Nature do what she normally does,? Landreth says.

?Clearing out the A-beta from the brain had a profound effect on the mice?s behavior, too. Mice loaded down with A-beta have memory deficits and can?t learn new things as well as normal mice. After taking bexarotene for several days, animals showed a startling improvement in several different kinds of tests.

Normally, mice that are put into cages with a pile of soft tissue paper begin to chew the paper and form it into a soft pile, making a nest. The mice with an Alzheimer?s-like condition lost the ability to make the association between seeing the paper and the possibility of a soft place to sleep. But after six days of taking bexarotene, these mice began making nests again, the team reports.

Another measure of performance came from testing the sense of smell, which people often lose in the early stages of Alzheimer?s disease. When mice smell a strong odor repeatedly, they get used to the odor and don?t react strongly the third, fourth or fifth time they smell it.

Mice with brains full of A-beta didn?t get used to the odor, though, acting surprised each time they encountered the scent. But after treatment with the drug, the mice recovered the ability to get used to an odor. In these and other? tests, abnormal behavior was reversed in mice that had received bexarotene.

More work is required, such as replicating the study with the human version of ApoE (the researchers used the mouse version of the protein). But since the drug is already FDA-approved, says neuroscientist David Holtzman of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, ?you have a very clear path forward in humans.?

Landreth and Cramer hold a provisional patent application on using bexarotene as an Alzheimer?s therapy, and have started a company called ReXceptor Inc. to conduct more research. The team plans to test bexarotene in people in the coming months.

?Making the leap from mice to humans is the most difficult step in drug development,? says Gandy. ?Based just on odds, I would bet against the drug, but the mechanism is novel and appealing, so I'm hoping that it beats the odds.?

In addition to its promise in treating Alzheimer?s disease, bexarotene might offer scientists a way to clarify A-beta?s role in the disease. The relationship has gone untested because scientists haven?t had a good way to reduce A-beta. ?This is a perfect tool for testing the amyloid hypothesis,? Gandy says.

The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) is urging Americas business leaders to become personally involved in leading the United States to wellness by taking the CEO Pledge, a key component of the United States first-ever National Physical Activity Plan (Plan). The Plan is a comprehensive set of policies, programs, and initiatives aimed at increasing physical activity in all segments of the American population with the ultimate purpose of improving health, preventing disease and disability, and enhancing quality of life. Chief Executive Officers who take the pledge vow to improve employee health and wellness by producing opportunities and resources for physical activity before, during, or after the workday.

The CEO Pledge was unveiled last week at the HERO Forum, the annual conference of the Health Enhancement Research Organization, by Dave Pickering, a strategy leader for the Plan and CEO of Preventure.

The CEO Pledge makes clear that business leaders have an influential role to play in addressing our countrys health and health care crises, said Joe Moore, President and CEO of IHRSA. With most working adults spending roughly half their waking hours on the job on the days that they work, it is incumbent upon business and industry leaders to become part of the solution. By promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles within the workplace, CEOs help their companys bottom line. But they also help society.

The CEO Pledge is being launched at an extremely significant timejust as world leaders are gathering in New York for the High-level meeting of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases. According to the UN, the four main non-communicable diseasescardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic lung diseases and diabeteskill three in five people worldwide, and cause great socioeconomic harm. This is only the second time in the history of the UN that the General Assembly has met on a health issue. The last issue was AIDS.

In todays largely sedentary work environments, these NCDs, or chronic diseases, are plaguing Americas workforce; driving up the cost of healthcare; and causing U.S. businesses to suffer considerable financial losses due to lost productivity resulting from absenteeism, disability, and presenteeism (being sick at work). Yet, many of these NCDs can be prevented, mitigated, and/or managed with regular exercise, proper diet, and healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Exercise and other workplace wellness programs can help curb the dramatic rise that we are seeing in these non-communicable diseases, said Moore. But these programs also bring significant financial benefits to businesses.

Researchers have documented anywhere from $ 1.49 to $ 13 return for every dollar invested in employee wellness. Studies show that employees who exercise at least once a week, regardless of their weight, have lower health care costs than their sedentary co-workers. One study, in fact, showed that active employees take 27 percent fewer sick days and report 14 to 25 percent fewer disability days than inactive employees. Whats more, workplace wellness programs help attract and retain talented employees.

According to a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) that came out in advance of the UN High-level meeting, 87 percent of all U.S. deaths are due to NCDs. And 43 percent of the U.S. population is physically inactive.

The National Physical Activity Plan is inspiring action by U.S. leaders from multiple disciplines and is creating an historic movement to increase physical activity among all Americans, said Pickering. The CEO Pledge asks Americas business leaders to pledge their commitment to the betterment of their companies and employeesand to become part of the solution to our nations health and health care challenges.

Moore also noted: It is appropriate that we are taking action to implement our countrys own National Physical Activity Plan as world leaders gather to formulate ideas on how to strengthen national capacities globally for addressing the prevention and control of NCDs.

Primary Prevention and the Benefits of Regular Exercise

IHRSA has long been a proponent of primary prevention for a healthier, more prosperous America.

Primary prevention refers to the deterrence of disease before it occurs by engaging in beneficial lifestyle behaviors, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, avoidance of tobacco and other controlled substances, stress management, and routine medical exams.

Since the late 1980s, roughly two-thirds of the increase in health care spending in the United States has been due to the increased prevalence of treated chronic disease, according to the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease. Today, about half of all Americans suffer from one or more chronic disease. Yet, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chronic diseases are largely attributable to four controllable health risk behaviors: (1) the lack of physical activity, (2) poor nutrition, (3) tobacco use, and (4) excessive alcohol consumption.

The CDC estimates that 80 percent of heart disease and stroke, 80 percent of type 2 diabetes, and 40 percent of cancer could be prevented if Americans stopped smoking, exercised more, and started eating more healthfully. A full $ 5.6 billion in heart disease costs could be saved if 10 percent of adults began a regular walking program. And according to a 2008 report by the Trust for Americas Health, an investment of $ 10 per person per year in proven community-based programs to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and prevent smoking and other tobacco use, could save the country more than $ 16 billion annually within five years. The potential savings in direct medical costs if all inactive American adults engaged in regular physical activity could be as high as $ 80,000,000,000.

Research shows that physical activity is extremely important to good health. At the proper moderate intensity, regular exercise significantly improves overall health; reduces the risk of heart disease by 40 percent; lowers the risk of stroke by 27 percent; reduces the incidence of high blood pressure by almost 50 percent; reduces the incidence of diabetes by almost 50 percent; can reduce mortality and the risk of recurrent breast cancer by almost 50 percent; can lower the risk of colon cancer by over 60 percent; can reduce the risk of developing of Alzheimers disease by one-third; and can decrease depression as effectively as medications or behavioral therapyaccording to Exercise is Medicine, a global initiative supported by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) calling on physicians to assess and review every patients physical activity program at every visit.
