COLUMBIA, S.C.?Rick Santorum Monday accused Mitt Romney and Ron Paul of lying about his record and promised an intense effort to rebut the charges with his own attacks.
Santorum began what staffers are promising will be a new tactic of specifically rebutting charges against him and turning them back to his rivals.
Continue ReadingThat?s what he did in calling for Romney to ask the pro-Romney Restore our Future Super PAC to remove a line from a negative ad that says he supported giving felons the right to vote.
?The position I supported is more strict than the position that Gov. Romney ruled over when he was governor of Massachusetts and did nothing to correct,? Santorum said, implicitly acknowledging that he supported federal legislation that allowed convicted felons to get re-enfranchised. ?So maybe his super PAC should redo the ad to criticize Gov. Romney for being soft on felons.?
Santorum, who?s seeking to become the consensus conservative choice to oppose Romney in the days until Saturday?s South Carolina primary, said he was hoping to intensify the fight.
?They?ve been hitting me in the last few days,? he said. ?I don?t know if they?re taking a toll or not. It doesn?t matter. To me, what matters is putting the truth out there and seeing the hypocrisy that Gov. Romney has engaged in ? someone who has a record that?s actually ?worse? than me on the issue of felons and someone who was aggressively seeking earmarks when he was governor of Massachusetts and then complaining to me that I did the same thing.?
Santorum vehemently defended his record on several other topics, including claims that he is not a sufficiently firm supporter of abortion rights (?There?s nobody that?s been a leader on the pro-life issue!?), that he?s soft on the Second Amendment (?I have an A+ rating with the NRA!?) and that he opposed federal right-to-work legislation.
Santorum ended his remarks to go shake hands with patrons at the diner where he was speaking. But when asked about a claim Paul ad that he was ?corrupt,? Santorum walked back to the microphones and tore into the Texas congressman too.
